Front Yard, phase 2

Phase 1 for the front yard was to get it prepped for the housewarming, which basically involved yanking a ton of weeds, taking out the ice plant(?) that had spread across most of the space, and moving a double handful of the irises from the back to the front so that the front section wouldn’t look as desolate as the back…

Today we decided to tackle getting things a little bit nicer. Around the neighborhood we’ve seen some landscaping done with black tree bark/mulch and thought it looked pretty cool, so we decided to clear the irises, shave the top layer of dirt off, lay down some landscaping fabric and mulch it.

Six cubic feet of mulch just barely covered the space, but it looks quite a bit better! Soon, we’ll choose some new drought-happy plants, but for now the whole front area looks a lot cleaner:

Side note – on the side of the house is a bush which has some nice yellow flowers. Unfortunately, it was really overwhelmed with disease and pests, and not growing very well. Neither of us was in love with it, so we decided to give it the axe today. Fifteen minutes with a wood blade on the sawzall and we at least got it down to a small stump. Digging it out will have to wait a bit longer.
